2005 witnessed
the 50th anniversary of twinning between Aberdeen City and the
City of Regensburg, Germany, which was established in November
1955. Aberdeen YMCA members have, since 1994, benefited
from this twinning partnership courtesy of financial assistance
and advice from Aberdeen City Council towards the development of
our international youth exchange programme.
To mark this
significant occasion, a team of 6 cyclists representing Aberdeen
YMCA and our partner YMCA in Regensburg, CVJM Regensburg, cycled the 2000km distance between the two cities to celebrate
the anniversary. Symbolically, the cyclists cycled on
tandem bikes to symbolise twinning and its benefits. The
actual event began, in Regensburg, on Sunday 24 July 2005
and terminated at the Town House in Aberdeen on Tuesday 2 August
2005.
The high profile
event was used as a platform to raise funds for the YMCA and the
Lord Provost's Charitable Fund for Multiple Sclerosis.
